A British holidaymaker from North Yorkshire is fighting for her life in an Ibiza hospital after collapsing in her hotel bathroom from suspected heat stroke. Sue Adams, 62, had travelled to the Balearic island with her husband James on August 29 for a week's holiday in the sun.
James, 66, said the couple spent their first day relaxing by the pool and enjoyed an evening meal before returning to their hotel room around 9:30pm. At 4am, he heard a noise when his wife went to the toilet and went to check on her, finding her unconscious on the bathroom floor with a swollen, bruised right eye. He put her in the recovery position and called an ambulance.
When the ambulance crew arrived, Sue began to convulse and was rushed to hospital. A full body scan revealed no internal bleeding but two small fractures – one in her face and one in her lower lumbar area. She was placed on a ventilator and kept under sedation. She has now been in an induced coma for three weeks, has fought off a lung infection, and doctors have said her kidneys are failing. They are attempting to slowly bring her round but she will need a tracheostomy due to the time spent on a ventilator.
James believes heat stroke caused his wife to faint, possibly hitting her head on the bathroom sink and triggering a seizure. He said: "I initially put it down to heat stroke. Sue is quite prone to dehydration in a hot environment and has fainted before. Looking back now on reflection neither of us drank enough on that first day in the sun."
Her treatment is being paid for by the NHS after a temporary Global Health Insurance Card was obtained through the British consulate, but James must cover his own accommodation, food, and transport, which costs around €60 per hospital visit and €1,000 a week for lodging near the hospital. A GoFundMe page has been set up by one of his sons to help with the financial burden.
James, from Loftus, said he would be devastated to return to the UK without his wife. He added: "The nurse side of me kicked in and I put her in the recovery position and kept talking to her. But, at the same time I was desperately worried and frightened that she had done some serious damage. The emotions now. I've got tears in my eyes telling you this."
