A criminal investigation has been launched after a British pensioner was found dead in a hotel pool on the Greek island of Crete. The 78-year-old woman had been swimming at a hotel in Hersonissos when she fell ill and was pulled from the water.
Emergency services pronounced her dead at the scene. Police subsequently detained three people, including two hotel workers aged 51 and 41 and a 21-year-old lifeguard. All three have been released on bail pending further inquiries.
The incident is the latest involving British holidaymakers abroad this summer. Earlier, a 52-year-old British man drowned in a hotel pool in Majorca, and in mid-July, two British men were found dead in a hotel pool in Portugal.
