A British tourist has drowned in Colombia after reportedly travelling to the country to get married. The 30-year-old man got into difficulties in the sea off the Caribbean port city of Cartagena.
The alarm was raised around 7am local time in El Laguito, a popular tourist peninsula and residential neighbourhood. Local reports indicate the man had just married his partner, who is believed to have been with him at the time.
Emergency responders attempted to revive him but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Sea conditions were described as rough. An investigation is ongoing, though the death has been described as accidental. His body has been taken to a forensic medicine institute for a post-mortem.
Harrowing footage published by a local media outlet showed a woman believed to be his partner crouching over his body, covered by a white sheet, weeping and shouting, 'My baby, oh my baby' and 'No.'
This incident follows recent drownings of British tourists in Bali and Australia. In Bali, a 39-year-old man died after being caught in a rip current. In Australia, a 66-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman lost their lives at Shellharbour Beach in New South Wales.
