Bristol has been named the UK's most beautiful city, ranking among the world's top 10 in a new study that used eye-tracking technology to measure visual appeal. The vibrant city, straddling the River Avon, scored 83.7 out of 100, placing it in 5th position on Premier Inn's 'world's most beautiful summer cities' list.
The study, conducted by Premier Inn, found that Bristol was the only UK city to make the top 10. It outperformed Bath and York, which ranked 25th and 61st respectively. The city's hilly streets lined with colourful houses, glistening waterfront, iconic Victorian bridge, world-renowned street art, and thriving independent scene contributed to its high ranking.
What makes Bristol stand out
Bristol's harbourside is a major hub, packed with historic attractions including Brunel's SS Great Britain, M Shed, We The Curious in Millennium Square, and Arnolfini, a contemporary arts centre along the quayside. The waterfront is also home to pubs offering scenic views of hot air balloons that frequently pass overhead, along with independent eateries at Wapping Wharf and chic coffee houses.
The Clifton Suspension Bridge, perhaps the city's most famous landmark, opened in 1864 and spans the dramatic Avon Gorge. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1831 as part of a competition, it has been consistently acknowledged as a "stunning piece of engineering." Bristol is also known for its vibrant street art, with numerous murals and works by Banksy dotted around the pseudonymous artist's hometown.
Entertainment and culture
Alongside its scenic beauty, Bristol is a thriving entertainment hub. It boasts countless music venues, the historic Bristol Hippodrome theatre, and various festivals held annually. The city's flourishing independent scene is evident on Gloucester Road and at St Nicholas Market.
The top 10 most beautiful cities in the world, according to the study, are: Banff in Canada, Mykonos in Greece, Sydney in Australia, Bruges in Belgium, Bristol in the UK, Palma de Mallorca in Spain, Kyoto in Japan, Kotor in Montenegro, Auckland in New Zealand, and Los Angeles in the USA.
