Millions of Brits are predicted to embark on a bank holiday blowout to mark the final weekend of summer, despite forecasts of unsettled weather across the UK.
After weeks of sweltering temperatures, much of the country is in for far more unsettled conditions, with downpours forecast in many areas from Saturday through to Monday. However, it isn't expected to dampen the spirits of families who are set to use the long weekend to embark on days out and to visit loved ones and friends.
10.6 Million Overnight Trips Planned
Research by tourist body VisitEngland suggests 10.6 million people are planning an overnight holiday trip in the UK this bank holiday weekend, bringing an estimated £4.3 billion boost to the economy. The figure is slightly down on last year, when 11.2 million planned to take an overnight break over the same period, but would still mean a vital late pick-me-up for the country’s hotels, pubs and restaurants.
It follows a decline in domestic overnight trips in 2025, particularly those to the coast, which was down 18% year-on-year in England.
Businesses Look for a Late Summer Lift
Patricia Yates, VisitEngland Chief Executive, said: “From invigorating coastal walks, lively festivals, great pubs and boutique stays to art and culture, history and heritage, there is something for all tastes and budgets. Businesses will be looking to the long weekend for a critical late summer lift after what has been a very mixed year for many destinations.”
She added: “We can also see from our latest consumer research that the cost of living remains a concern. Brits are still keen to take their breaks, however many are booking last minute and wanting to save on accommodation, activities, eating out and searching for good value options. It is nail biting if you’re a small business, so do please get out and support our amazing destinations, first class attractions and local events this long weekend and beyond.”
Its survey also showed that a further 5.8 million people are undecided about whether to take an overnight holiday trip in England during the bank holiday weekend. The top reason is ‘waiting to see what the weather is like’.
Record Getaway Trips and Travel Plans
Motoring group the RAC had predicted a record-breaking 20 million getaway trips will be made over the weekend, pointing to traffic jams at hotspots. It says ‘Frantic Friday’ is likely to be mired in heavy traffic, with more trips planned compared to any day over the bank holiday, as 4.1 million get the long weekend off to an early start. Saturday could see 3.8 million trips and another 3.1 million trips are expected to be made on Sunday, it says, followed by 3.4 million on bank holiday Monday.
It seems many aren’t leaving it to chance - or have already seen the bank holiday weather forecasts - and plan to head abroad for one last summer break. Budget airline Ryanair expects to carry a record 860,000 passengers through its 22 UK airports this weekend.
Mobile giant Virgin Media O2 estimates Brits will splurge at least an extra £2.8 billion on what it calls a “bank holiday blowout”, including last-minute trips, meals out and treats. It reckons 27 million will spend more than usual over the August bank holiday. A survey by the firm found more than a quarter of workers have deliberately delayed making, booking or confirming their plans until they are paid, rising to 37% of 18- to 24-year-olds.
