New research from travel agency Expedia reveals that Friday is the cheapest day to depart for a flight, with travellers saving an average of 18% compared to Saturday. Despite being the busiest travel day, Friday offers the best value, while Tuesday is the quietest but most expensive day to fly.
June is the cheapest month to fly, with tickets 68% cheaper than December, saving up to £250 per ticket. For domestic economy flights, booking 31 to 45 days in advance saves about £38 compared to six months ahead. International travellers can save an average of £93 by booking 15 to 30 days in advance, or £85 if booking 31 to 45 days prior.
The most economical UK airports for departures are Belfast (£170), Liverpool (£171), and Bournemouth (£171). The most expensive are London Heathrow (£533), Humberside (£420), and Manchester (£404).
Expedia's Air Hacks Report also highlights emerging trends: one in five travellers have taken an 'extreme day trip' with a return flight within 24 hours. Over half (51%) prefer morning departures, and a third travel with only hand luggage, with 29% wearing extra layers to avoid baggage fees.
Melanie Fish, Expedia spokesperson, said: 'We are very excited to release these new findings and share our top air hacks for 2026 to ensure holidaymakers get the best value for money.'
