Albania is emerging as a budget-friendly alternative to the Maldives, offering pristine beaches and turquoise waters at a fraction of the cost. The Balkan nation, located between Montenegro and Greece, provides a Mediterranean escape that is significantly cheaper than other regional destinations.
According to Booking.com's 2024 Travel Predictions, 62% of travellers said rising living costs would limit their travel plans, while 50% expressed a desire to visit destinations with lower living expenses. The platform identified the coastal town of Vlorë as a top destination, describing it as 'Europe's answer to the Maldives'.
Vlorë, situated on the Albanian Riviera, boasts some of Albania's most beautiful beaches. Accommodation starts from as low as £47.87 per night, with five-star options available from £189.06. While there are no direct flights to Vlorë, the nearest airport is in Tirana, roughly a two-hour drive away, with budget-friendly flights from the UK.
Travel experts recommend hiring a car for convenience, though a shuttle bus service also runs between Tirana Airport and Vlorë. The destination is particularly appealing for UK travellers, with 43% seeking luxe-for-less copycat holidays to reduce costs.
