Albania cheapest European summer destination with £17 flights

Albania has been named one of the cheapest European destinations for a summer getaway, offering a Maldives-like coastal experience. The capital, Tirana, tops Hoppa's list for the most affordable three-star hotel stays in Europe, averaging just £41.72 per night.

Budget-friendly prices in Tirana

Research by airport transfer experts Hoppa found that a draft beer in Tirana costs around £2.41 on average, while a meal starts from £7.27. Flights to Tirana are also cheap, with one-way tickets from as little as £17 with Wizz Air in August, departing from various London airports. The flight takes under three hours, according to Skyscanner.

Despite its compact size, Tirana is walkable and offers unique architecture, colourful facades, street art, parks, museums, and galleries. It is known for budget-friendly restaurants, café culture, and a mix of modern and historic attractions.

Albanian coastline compared to Maldives

Adam Hodge, a Wizz Air cabin crew member for eight years, described Tirana as "a very up-and-coming" destination. He said: "It not only has the city aspect of it, but nearby, it also has the beaches and coastal areas, so it has the best of both worlds."

The Albanian coastline, stretching along the Adriatic and Ionian seas, features crystal-clear turquoise waters and white-sand beaches. The Ksamil Islands are a notable highlight, often compared to the Maldives. Other popular spots include Dhërmi and Jale Beach in the south, known for beach parties and bars, while the northern shores offer quieter coves.

Hodge added: "Albania has similarities to the Maldives, especially with its beachy vibes, lovely sun loungers, and its aquamarine waters." He noted that Albania offers good value for money, especially as it does not use the euro, making dining, drinks, and activities more affordable.
