500-Year-Old Torquay Pub Reopens After Year-Long Closure
500-Year-Old Torquay Pub Reopens After Closure

The Hole in the Wall, Torquay's oldest pub, has reopened its doors after being closed for over 12 months, marking a significant moment for the Devon seaside town. The historic establishment, which dates back to 1540, welcomed customers again on Wednesday night (October 29) under new ownership.

Historic Pub Restored

The pub, located just off the harbour, dates back to the reign of Henry VIII and has long been suspected as a haunt for local smugglers over the centuries. It is known for its traditional charm, low-beamed ceilings, cobbled and paved floors, and live music nights.

The venue had shut in April 2025 due to mounting debts and rising operating costs, raising concerns about the potential loss of the town's heritage. Stonegate, partnered with local group Yellow and Blue Enterprises, has now breathed new life into the pub while preserving its traditional character.

Reopening Celebrations

The reopening was marked by a live performance from popular local musician Drew Millin and friends, who played from around 8.30pm. The opening night saw drinks only, with operators confirming that food service will begin soon.

New publicans Stefan and Agnes announced the reopening in a Facebook post, saying: "We are happy to announce that our historic pub will be reopening on Thursday 29th of October with Drew Millin and friends returning to play at around 8.30. It is drinks only for the time being, but we will keep you posted when the food service will start."

They added: "We cannot wait to welcome you all and are humbled by your excitement and kind messages. We will be getting back to everyone who's reached out to us very soon!"

Local Reaction

The Facebook post has been liked by over 650 people and attracted close to 100 comments, with many locals describing the reopening as a major boost for the town. John Norman said: "Best possible news for Torquay and surrounding area." Stephen Dransfield added: "Hurrah," while Jonathan Bosley agreed: "Great to hear that you're reopening!"

Alan Varcoe commented: "Eating in this place was a primary reason for my wife and I having weekends away in Torquay. Always a great atmosphere and outstanding food. Actually, we've not been back to Torquay since before The Hole in the Wall closed. Looking forward to returning."

Emma Draper added: "Wonderful news! To walk up Park Lane once again knowing this 500 year old pub with its stunning listed cobbled floors is OPEN will be a joy! We know that the roof was a big worry and expense so it's a delight to know this has been tackled. Good luck to the new owners! An honour to run such an establishment!"
