World Cup Ball Rough Design May Reduce Long Kick Range

Every four years, the men’s World Cup delivers certainties: regulated pitch dimensions, offside flags, and a referee’s whistle. But one key piece of equipment changes on purpose: the ball. Adidas, which has supplied World Cup balls since 1970, introduces a new match ball for each tournament, bringing fresh aerodynamic calculations for players.

For the past 20 years, engineering colleagues in Japan and England have tested new balls in wind tunnels to measure drag, side and lift forces. The data from these tests feeds trajectory simulations that predict how the ball will behave in real-game settings. This research could mean the difference between a goal or a miss for strikers, a save or a blunder for goalkeepers, and jubilation or heartache for fans.

This year’s ball, the Trionda, is especially interesting. Unveiled in autumn 2025, its red, blue and green graphics correspond to the three host countries—Canada, the United States and Mexico—with maple leaf, star and eagle motifs. For the first time in men’s World Cup history, matches will be played with a four-panel ball. Fewer panels might suggest a smoother ball, but the Trionda has intentionally deep seams, three pronounced grooves on each panel and fine surface texturing.

Wind tunnel tests at the University of Tsukuba measured the drag coefficient of the Trionda and compared it with four predecessors: 2022’s Al Rihla, 2018’s Telstar 18, 2014’s Brazuca and 2010’s Jabulani. The tests identified the drag crisis—the speed range where changes in boundary layer and flow separation produce a sharp change in drag, altering acceleration, trajectory and range. The Trionda reaches its drag crisis at a lower speed, about 27 mph (43 kph), below the 31-40 mph (50-65 kph) range for Al Rihla, Telstar 18 and Brazuca, and far below Jabulani’s roughly 49-62 mph (79-100 kph) range.

This means the Trionda behaves like a rougher ball, with higher drag at lower speeds. As a result, long kicks may have reduced range, and the ball may dip and swerve more unpredictably. Goalkeepers and strikers will need to adjust to these characteristics during the tournament.
