The trend is not just about audio quality. Many see it as a cultural rebellion against big tech and the complexities of wireless devices. Aryn Grusin, a social worker from Portland, Oregon, switched to wired earbuds and says, 'I like that it signifies to the world that I'm listening to something.' She adds, 'It feels like a lot of people are almost turning on technology because it's becoming so advanced.'
Sound quality remains a key advantage. Chris Thomas, editor at large at SoundGuys, explains that while wireless headphones have improved, mainstream models still lag behind wired options in value. 'With a wire, you just plug in and it works,' he says, noting that Bluetooth connections can suffer from compatibility issues and poor performance.
The backlash extends beyond practicality. Actor Zoë Kravitz has criticised Bluetooth for ruining important moments, saying, 'Imagine the amount of times that you're with someone on a date, you're trying to set a vibe, and then you have to forget the network.' Wired headphones have become a fashion statement, with Instagram accounts like Wired It Girls showcasing celebrities such as Ariana Grande and Charli XCX wearing them. Some social media users even view wireless earbuds as a sign of lower status, with one viral tweet stating, 'Wearing wireless 24/7 tells me you don't own any land.'
For many, the appeal of wired headphones lies in their reliability. Ailene Doloboff, a dialogue editor in Los Angeles, says, 'With Bluetooth it's always one extra step.' Wired headphones join a list of seemingly outdated technologies making a comeback as consumers push back against the constant upgrades and connectivity issues of modern devices.
