Vodafone has announced it will launch a new TV platform in the UK next month, giving Sky another competitor in the premium television market. The device, called Vodafone TV, will let households watch over 150 channels without needing an aerial or satellite dish.
Web-powered streaming hub
Like Sky's Stream box, Vodafone TV is powered by the internet and will come packed with services including Netflix and HBO Max. The Freely platform is also included, offering live TV without a monthly subscription.
Subscribers will receive a compact plug-in hub providing a wide range of content, along with 4K picture quality, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos audio. Vodafone says the device will also offer access to over 300 games and additional apps through compatibility with the Google Play Store.
Company statement and availability
"Vodafone TV is a new entertainment hub that brings live TV, On Demand, streaming, gaming, music, and a huge range of content apps together in one place, without the need for a dish or aerial," the company explained.
Vodafone TV will be available from October to new and existing Vodafone customers with a home broadband, 5G Broadband or mobile plan. This makes Vodafone the only Mobile Network Operator in the UK to bundle TV with mobile and mobile broadband, giving customers more flexibility. There is currently no word on price, but more details are expected in the coming weeks.
Market impact
The launch means Vodafone will compete with other firms offering broadband and TV bundles, including Sky, EE, BT, TalkTalk and Virgin Media. With more competition around, there will be more choices for consumers and possibly more deals to help lower prices. If a TV deal is coming to an end, it could be a good time to shop around.
