A Strange Experience on the Tube
Russ recounted a "strange experience" at Embankment Station while en route to Covent Garden. Upon disembarking from his train, he noticed something unusual: the voice delivering the "mind the gap" warning differed from the standard announcement heard across the Tube network. This prompted him to investigate further, leading to the revelation of a heartfelt narrative.
The voice belongs to the late Oswald Laurence, whose recording had echoed through Embankment Station for over four decades. Oswald passed away in 2007, and his widow, Margaret McCollum, would frequently visit the station to hear his voice, as it provided her with a sense of connection to her deceased husband.
The Disruption and Restoration
In 2012, Transport for London (TfL) updated its public address systems, standardising announcements across the entire network. This change meant Oswald's voice was replaced, leaving Margaret devastated. She described feeling "horrified" and "completely, utterly devastated" upon realizing his voice was no longer audible.
Margaret took action by contacting TfL, requesting the reinstatement of her husband's recording. Initially, TfL expressed doubts, citing that the original tape might be lost due to the shift to digital systems. However, after persistent efforts, the organisation located the tape and restored Oswald's voice to the northbound Northern Line platform at Embankment Station.
A Lasting Tribute
Thanks to the intervention of TfL's then-operations and asset maintenance director, Nigel Holness, Margaret was provided with a CD containing her husband's voice. Today, Oswald Laurence's "mind the gap" announcement remains a permanent fixture at the station, serving as a touching tribute to their enduring love.
