Manchester United have triggered Youri Tielemans' £35 million release clause at Aston Villa, but the Belgian midfielder may face an immediate disappointment upon arrival: he is unlikely to receive his preferred squad number, the No. 8 shirt, which is currently worn by club captain Bruno Fernandes.
INEOS Make Transfer Breakthrough for Tielemans
The Red Devils activated the release clause in Tielemans' contract, securing the 29-year-old as part of a midfield overhaul under manager Michael Carrick. Tielemans is expected to join fellow new signing Andrey Santos, who arrived from Chelsea on Monday, as the second of three midfield additions this summer. United are also targeting another midfielder to fill the void left by Casemiro, while Manuel Ugarte faces an extended spell on the sidelines after a World Cup injury.
United's need for depth is amplified by their return to the Champions League and an expanded fixture list. Last season, they played only two domestic cup matches, losing both, and Carrick is expected to demand progress in all competitions.
Shirt Number Conflict at Old Trafford
Tielemans has worn the No. 8 shirt throughout his time at Aston Villa, as well as during his spells at Leicester City and for Belgium at the World Cup. However, at Manchester United, captain Bruno Fernandes occupies that number and is unlikely to relinquish it, despite Fernandes playing more as a natural No. 10 under Carrick.
According to sources close to the club, Tielemans will have to choose an alternative number. When he first moved to England with Leicester, he wore No. 21 for a season before switching to No. 8. That number is currently available at United. During his time at Monaco, Tielemans wore No. 15 and No. 17 before settling on No. 8. However, Leny Yoro wore No. 15 last season, and No. 17 has already been taken by new signing Santos.
Potential Number Options for Tielemans
Tielemans wore No. 31 throughout his youth at Anderlecht, but that number is currently held by Senne Lammens. There is a possibility that Lammens could switch to No. 1 if current goalkeeper Altay Bayindir moves up, freeing No. 31 for Tielemans.
Regardless of the shirt number, United fans are expected to welcome the experienced midfielder, who beat off competition from several clubs to secure the transfer. Tielemans is seen as a player who could provide similar value to Casemiro in his later years.
