Nintendo has announced a price increase for its Switch Online subscription service in Japan, effective July 1, 2026. The monthly fee will rise from ¥306 to ¥400, a roughly 30% increase. Three-month and twelve-month plans will see 22% and 25% hikes respectively.

According to Nintendo's official announcement, the revised pricing applies only to Japan. Monthly subscriptions go from ¥306 to ¥400, three-month from ¥840 to ¥1,020, and twelve-month from ¥2,400 to ¥3,000. Nintendo apologized for any inconvenience, stating: "We sincerely apologize to all users of Nintendo Switch Online for any inconvenience this may cause, and we appreciate your understanding."
Regional Exemptions and Future Outlook
Currently, users in the UK, EU, and US are unaffected. However, industry observers expect similar increases globally, given Nintendo's pattern of aligning prices across regions. The Switch 2 console is also set for a price hike in September 2026, with a $50 increase in the US and an undisclosed rise in Japan.
Competitive Comparison
Despite the hike, Nintendo Switch Online remains the cheapest among major console subscriptions. PlayStation Plus costs ¥850 per month in Japan, and Xbox Game Pass starts at ¥850. Even after July, Nintendo's service will be significantly more affordable.
