Sunderland agree £21.5m Mayenda transfer to Rennes amid Xhaka interest
Sunderland agree £21.5m Mayenda transfer to Rennes

Sunderland have agreed a £21.5million fee with French Ligue 1 side Rennes for striker Eliezer Mayenda, with the player set to undergo a medical before completing the move. The Black Cats signed Mayenda from FC Sochaux in July 2023 for around £1million, meaning a substantial profit on the 21-year-old.

Mayenda's Sunderland career

Mayenda played a key role in Sunderland's return to the Premier League, scoring the first goal in the Championship play-off final against Sheffield United in May 2025. However, he struggled to command a regular place under manager Regis Le Bris last season, playing just 1,004 minutes across 21 games, managing two goals and an assist. His first Premier League goal came in a 3-0 victory against West Ham United last August.

The Spain Under-21 international signed a new contract until 2030 a year ago, but limited game time in the top flight led Sunderland to believe a move was best for both parties. Personal terms are not expected to be an issue.

Rennes and the transfer details

Rennes, who finished sixth in Ligue 1 last season and qualified for the Europa League, have won the race for Mayenda amid interest from several European clubs. They have already completed the signing of goalkeeper Nicolas Lemaître on a free transfer from Troyes.

Sochaux are understood to have a significant sell-on clause, but Sunderland will still bank a considerable profit that will go into Regis Le Bris' transfer kitty for the summer window.

Granit Xhaka interest continues

Meanwhile, Sunderland have not yet received a fresh offer from Chelsea for captain Granit Xhaka. The Swiss midfielder, who helped his nation reach the World Cup last 16 on Wednesday, remains a target for Chelsea. The Blues had an £8million initial bid rejected and are understood to be willing to improve their offer.
