Tottenham Hotspur's second bid for Sandro Tonali has been promptly rejected by Newcastle United, with reports suggesting the Lilywhites failed to improve upon their original offer. The Italian midfielder is one of the most wanted players of the summer, with Spurs, Arsenal, Manchester United and Real Madrid all credited with an interest. Yet Tottenham appear to be the only club actively tabling bids for Tonali at this stage.
Spurs' Offers Rejected
Last week, Roberto De Zerbi's side are understood to have seen an approach of approximately £80million turned down. Undeterred, it is now reported that the club have gone back to St. James' Park with the very same figure, only to be met with an identical response. The Mail claim that Spurs simply requested Newcastle reconsider their original stance, with the Magpies refusing to shift their position. It is believed Newcastle are holding out for a figure closer to £100m for the 26-year-old this summer, and no acceptable package has yet been tabled.
Newcastle's Stance
The Tyneside club are in no particular rush to offload their midfield star, given he still has two years remaining on his current contract, meaning Spurs may well have to meet their valuation if they are to secure Tonali before the new campaign gets under way. It comes as the Lodi-born star is believed to be seeking a fresh challenge ahead of 2026/27, following a disappointing season on Tyneside. Despite Spurs finishing 17th in the Premier League table compared to Newcastle's 12th, the club are pushing hard to strengthen their first-team squad ahead of the upcoming campaign.
Spurs' Summer Activity
Having already brought in Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and Jan Paul van Hecke, it appears the Lilywhites are now targeting midfield reinforcements - particularly given that Lucas Bergvall appears to be heading for the exit door. Yet Tonali is not the sole central midfielder to have been linked with a switch to North London in recent weeks. Alex Scott and Mateus Fernandes have also been mooted as potential arrivals under De Zerbi next season, though both prospects appear unlikely at this stage. AFC Bournemouth have made it clear to interested parties that Scott is not available this summer, as they look to hold on to their prized asset for at least one more year. Manchester United, meanwhile, are believed to have reached an agreement on personal terms with West Ham over Fernandes, and need only to meet the Hammers' £85m valuation to seal the transfer.
