Caulfield's comments about AI being the next Industrial Revolution were met with loud disapproval. She paused, laughed nervously, and asked, 'Oh! What happened? I struck a chord. May I finish?' The crowd cheered when she acknowledged the controversy, and she later noted the 'bipolar' nature of the topic. Despite her attempts to continue, further mentions of AI capabilities drew additional boos.
Comparison to Industrial Revolution
Caulfield argued that AI, like the Industrial Revolution, would bring economic growth and new businesses, citing Apple, Google, and Meta. She expressed optimism that AI alongside human intelligence could solve major problems. However, her remarks failed to resonate with graduates facing a job market increasingly disrupted by automation.

The incident quickly spread online. Cabel Sasser, co-founder of Panic Inc, shared footage on Bluesky, criticizing Caulfield's failure to read the room. 'When you're inside the bubble, you think everybody else is, but everybody isn't,' he wrote. The backlash highlights growing anxiety about AI's impact on employment, as it has become a leading cause of layoffs in the US.
