Sony's Discless PlayStation Plan Sparks Fury Among Gamers and Retailers
Sony's Discless PlayStation Plan Sparks Fury

Sony has announced that it will discontinue production of physical PlayStation game discs from January 2028, a move that has sparked widespread fury among gamers and high street retailers. The decision, which Sony claims reflects consumer preferences shifting towards digital media, has been met with strong opposition from Game, the UK's largest video game retailer, and its Spanish arm.

Game España Issues Warning

Game España released a lengthy statement condemning the decision, saying it “deeply worries us” because it will affect “everyone who understands video games as something more than just a downloadable file.” The retailer warned that the move will lead to “monopolies” as high street retailers lose a core revenue stream, handing pricing power to companies like Sony.

The statement, translated from Spanish, said: “Every time a physical edition disappears, we lose the FREEDOM to enjoy our hobby exactly how we want: the ability to lend a game to a friend, to resell it, to collect it, to preserve it, or simply to choose where and how we buy it, without monopolies.”

Game's 40-Year Defence of Physical Media

Game España emphasised its long-standing commitment to physical formats, stating: “At GAME, we have spent 40 years defending the physical format because we know that for millions of players, it isn't just a box on a shelf: it represents memories, collections, special editions, the history of video games, and above all, consumer rights.”

The retailer vowed to fight the decision: “We are not going to sit idly by. They want us to believe that this is a natural evolution, but we believe that the future should not be built by eliminating options, but by expanding them.”

Fans React with Fury

Gamers have also expressed outrage on social media platforms like Reddit. One user said: “I'm done buying any new PlayStation consoles after this news,” adding that it was a “big old middle finger to collectors and consumers.” Another stated: “This kills customer choice, the secondhand market, physical retailers, preservation, trade-ins, backwards compatibility, sharing your joy with friends and family, this kills the entire appeal of console gaming for me. I won't be buying a PlayStation 6.”

A third user labelled the move Sony's “worst decision in their entire history” and claimed it would “single handedly” drive them from console to PC gaming. Another added: “With insane prices, an all-digital future, increasingly anti-consumer decisions and removal of purchased content from our library, could the PS6 be the console that kills the PlayStation brand? I think so.”

Impact on the High Street

The loss of physical game discs is seen as a major blow to the British high street, with retailers like Game relying on disc sales as a key revenue stream. The move could accelerate the decline of physical media in entertainment, following similar trends in music and film. Express.co.uk has contacted GAME UK for comment.
