Simon Reeve's Unexpected 5G Broadband Adventure in UK Home
Simon Reeve's 5G Broadband Adventure in UK Home

Simon Reeve, the renowned adventurer and television presenter, has embarked on an unexpected mission: delivering 5G broadband to remote areas of the United Kingdom. Despite having explored some of the most inhospitable regions on the planet, including the Arctic, the Congo Rainforest, and the Kalahari Desert, Reeve found himself battling a different kind of wilderness right at home in Devon.

The Struggle for Connectivity

Reeve, like millions of Britons, lives in a home that cannot access full fibre broadband. This has forced him to take extreme measures to stay connected. He has been seen scaling scaffolding outside his house and wandering through fields in search of a reliable signal. His efforts highlight a widespread issue: slow and unreliable Wi-Fi is a major frustration for 67% of people, according to new research by Vodafone. Nearly a quarter of Brits (24%) rely on hotspotting from their phones daily, even though 87% consider fast home Wi-Fi essential.

Unusual Work Spots

Reeve is not alone in his connectivity struggles. The research reveals that 55% of people have taken work calls in unusual locations when their home signal fails. Popular spots include the garden (18%), the car (14%), and even the bathroom (11%). For 18% of respondents, losing internet access means abandoning work for the rest of the day. Reeve himself has had to ban his son from streaming to combat slow Wi-Fi.

Vodafone's 5G Broadband Solution

Vodafone is launching 5G Broadband, a service designed to bring powerful connectivity to homes without full fibre. This could benefit around 3.7 million households in the UK, many of which are in cities—over 60% of those without full fibre are urban. Reeve took part in a special delivery mission, traversing land and sea to bring 5G routers to residents of a remote hamlet in rural Cornwall.

“It’s really significant that Vodafone is bringing powerful broadband to millions more homes across the UK that up to now have had to make do with slow connectivity,” Reeve said. “Vodafone 5G Broadband can be connected in an instant, and although my quest to get it to the Cornish countryside wasn’t straightforward, getting the locals connected to powerful broadband couldn’t have been simpler.”

Broadband Options for All

A Vodafone spokesperson added: “Slow or unreliable broadband is still a daily frustration for millions of people across the nation, whether they live in a remote hamlet or the middle of a busy city. Our research shows just how much it impacts people’s lives. With the addition of Vodafone 5G Broadband we’re giving customers real choice: full‑fibre broadband where it’s available, and powerful 5G Broadband where it’s not – plus, better options for anyone just wanting speed with ease and flexibility. We can now deliver a powerful, reliable service via our broadband solutions to 26 million homes - more than any other UK provider.”
