Royal Mail Disruption Alert for 29 UK Postcodes Today

Royal Mail has issued a disruption alert affecting 29 UK postcodes today, with many households and businesses across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland facing delayed mail deliveries. The delivery firm continues to grapple with operational challenges, including adverse weather and network issues, leading to widespread criticism over its service performance.

Ongoing Delivery Delays and Criticism

Royal Mail's owner, Daniel Kretinsky, recently addressed MPs, expressing deep regret for any late letters but denying that the company's track record is deteriorating. Speaking to the Commons Business select committee, he stated, "It is not perfect, but it is not catastrophic." However, this comes after Royal Mail was fined £21 million last October for missing First and Second Class delivery targets in its 2024-25 financial year.

Performance Shortfalls and Stamp Price Increases

In the 2024-25 financial year, Royal Mail delivered only 77% of First Class mail and 92.5% of Second Class mail on time, falling short of its targets of 93% and 98.5%, respectively. Compounding customer frustrations, stamp prices are set to rise next month, with First Class stamps increasing to £1.80 and Second Class to 91p, effective from April 6. This marks a significant jump from the 76p price for a First Class stamp in 2020.

Causes of Current Disruptions

Delays have persisted throughout the week, with 14 Royal Mail delivery offices reporting issues as of Friday, March 27. Affected areas include Birmingham, Luton, and Ilfracombe. The firm cited problems in its air and road network over the last 24 hours, including a flight from East Midlands to Prestwick that had to return due to adverse weather, impacting mail from the Midlands, South West, North of England, and Northern Ireland destined for Central and Southern Scotland.

Additionally, a vehicle carrying mail from Glasgow to the Midlands Parcel hub arrived late, affecting deliveries in parts of London, the South East, South West, Midlands, and Northern Ireland. Royal Mail explained that local issues such as high sick absence, resourcing challenges, or other factors in a small number of offices have temporarily hindered deliveries, but they aim to rotate services to minimise delays.
