PlayStation Warns PS3 and PS Vita Store Closures Affecting Millions
PS3 and PS Vita Stores Closing: PlayStation Warns Millions

Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation Store for PS3 and PlayStation Vita will be shut down, affecting millions of users worldwide. The closure will begin in some regions as early as the end of 2026, with the UK store remaining open until July 2027. After these dates, users will no longer be able to purchase new digital games or content for these consoles, though previously purchased items can still be downloaded.

Sony Cites Technical Challenges

In an official blog post, Sony stated: “After nearly two decades of supporting the PS3 console generation, we wanted to let you know we will be closing the PlayStation Store on PS3, as well as on PS Vita. We know this news may be disappointing to PS3 and PS Vita players who hold a special place in their hearts for this generation of gaming. PS3 and PS Vita represent an important era in our PlayStation history, so this was not an easy decision for us to make.” The company attributed the move to an inability to “support modern commerce systems” on the aging platforms.

Impact on Gamers and Digital Preservation

The announcement has sparked concern among gamers about digital game preservation, especially as Sony recently deleted a library of Studio Canal movies from users’ libraries without offering refunds. This comes alongside Sony’s commitment to a digital future: from 2028, PlayStation games will ship with codes instead of discs. With the upcoming PlayStation 6 and Xbox’s Project Helix reportedly lacking disc drives, and GTA 6 skipping a physical release, the closure of older stores raises questions about long-term access to digital purchases.

Timeline and Regional Differences

While specific dates for each region have not been detailed, Sony confirmed that some territories will lose access by the end of 2026. UK gamers have until July 2027 to make purchases. The PS3 launched in 2006 and the PS Vita in 2012, both now considered legacy hardware.
