Newcastle United are targeting at least three more signings before the season begins, focusing on a goalkeeper, a right-back, and a midfielder. Sporting director Ross Wilson is leading the efforts, with the club having funds available after missing out on Johan Manzambi, for whom they had prepared a £49 million bid.
Transfer Strategy and Targets
The Magpies are looking to inject energy into their squad by signing players of a similar age profile to Manzambi. On the goalkeeper front, Nick Pope is currently the number one, but the club is seeking a senior competitor for Ewen Jaouen. The intensity of the transfer window has increased after the setback with Manzambi, but the money remains available for reinvestment.
Bruno Guimaraes' Future
Manager Eddie Howe is keen to retain Bruno Guimaraes as the team's leader. Despite interest from Arsenal, who have been linked with a bid, high-placed sources at Arsenal insist they have not encouraged transfer speculation. However, an offer could still materialize, and if Guimaraes leaves, Howe would push for a more experienced leader, potentially shifting from the club's recent focus on younger players.
Squad Experience Concerns
Newcastle have lost several experienced players in recent months, including Kieran Trippier, Emil Krafth, Jamaal Lascelles, Anthony Gordon, and Sandro Tonali. This has left a gap in experience, which Howe acknowledges. The return of Fabian Schar, Joelinton, Joe Willock, Lewis Hall, and Jacob Ramsey for pre-season has been a positive, but further additions are needed.
Further Possible Deals
With the transfer window open until September 1, Newcastle may pursue additional deals beyond the three primary targets. The club's recruitment team remains active, and further activity is expected as the window progresses.
