Newcastle United have completed the £34million signing of Monaco midfielder Aladji Bamba on a five-year contract. The French defensive midfielder becomes the club's fourth addition in 40 days and is expected to be given an immediate chance to impress by head coach Eddie Howe.
Bamba delighted to join
Speaking after his move, Bamba said: “I’m very happy to be here – it’s a new challenge and I can’t wait to get started. I was very excited when I heard Newcastle were interested in signing me.
“I know about the history of the club and I’ve visited the stadium already, which is amazing. I can’t wait to be on the pitch there and hope to have some great times with the fans.
“I’m excited to test myself in a new league, the biggest league in the world. I learned a lot last season and now I feel ready for this new opportunity. I will give my all for this club.”
Howe and Wilson praise signing
Howe said: “I’m really pleased to see Aladji become a Newcastle United player. He’s another exciting, young signing who we’re really looking forward to working with.
“Aladji adds depth and a range of qualities to our midfield options, with huge potential for growth. His development since breaking through at Monaco has been really impressive and something we believe we can help him build on.
“He operates in a deeper role but has the ability to contribute all over the pitch, which he demonstrated in both Ligue 1 and the Champions League last season.”
Sporting director Ross Wilson said: “We’ve followed Aladji’s progress with Monaco in France closely, and his profile has been rising fast across Europe. When we saw the opportunity and his desire to come to Newcastle United, we moved quickly to secure his signature.
“We’re excited to see his evolution here in the Premier League and we are delighted to welcome him to Tyneside as our fourth addition to the squad this summer.”
Background and achievements
A club statement said Bamba began his football journey with local French club Blois, spending 10 years in their academy before moving to Monaco in 2021. He signed professional terms in 2024 and made his first-team debut aged 19 the following year.
Bamba was part of the France Under-20s side that won the Maurice Revello tournament last summer and has represented his country at youth level for three years. He featured five times in the UEFA Champions League last season, including both legs of Monaco’s knock-out phase play-off against Paris Saint-Germain, and made 25 appearances in all competitions.
He was named on the 2026 European Golden Boy award nominee list earlier this year. The award, currently held by PSG’s Désiré Doué and previously won by the likes of Lamine Yamal, Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham, recognises the best Under-21 talent in European football.
