Newcastle United have entered the race to sign Bayer Leverkusen forward Christian Kofane, joining Premier League champions Arsenal in pursuit of the 19-year-old Cameroon international, according to German outlet BILD.
Magpies close in on first summer signing
The Magpies are finalising their first addition of the summer, with Hoffenheim's Bazoumana Toure completing the formalities ahead of a move. However, Eddie Howe's side are also keeping a close eye on the Bundesliga, with Kofane attracting significant attention after a standout debut season in Germany.
Kofane only joined Leverkusen 12 months ago for €5.25 million but is now valued at around €100 million (£85 million) after scoring five goals and providing four assists in his first campaign. Arsenal have previously been linked with the forward, with his agent Eric Depolo describing the Gunners' interest as “serious” and highlighting his client's attributes.
Leverkusen reluctant to sell but open to offers
BILD reports that Leverkusen have no intention of selling the teenager after just one year in North Rhine-Westphalia. However, the club's policy dictates that no player is unsellable, meaning an £85 million bid would likely pique the interest of the hierarchy.
For Newcastle, the £85 million fee could prove a stumbling block. The club is focusing on signing high-potential youngsters for under £50 million, making a club-record transfer unlikely after the £69 million arrival of Nick Woltemade. Newcastle are always open to significant sales, such as Sandro Tonali's move to Tottenham Hotspur and Anthony Gordon's transfer to Barcelona, which allow them to reinvest.
Newcastle's summer rebuild
It is a crucial summer for Newcastle as Howe looks to guide the North East club back to the Champions League after finishing outside the top half last season. Toure is likely not to be the only arrival, as the Chronicle understands the club is targeting additions in four positions: a right-back, a midfielder, another forward, and a senior goalkeeper. However, Newcastle remain cautious on all deals until contracts are signed.
Nick Pope's future remains unclear, with clarity expected during pre-season, while Odysseas Vlachodimos has joined Sevilla on a season-long loan, generating a seven-figure fee. The recruitment focus at St James' Park will be on rebuilding using funds from Tonali's big-money move to Tottenham.
Kofane fits the profile but price is high
For Newcastle, the aim is to build a squad for the future, with age and player profile key factors in their summer targets. Kofane fits the bill as he turns 20 at the end of July. However, the £85 million fee does not currently align with the club's target of signing high-potential youngsters for under £50 million.
Newcastle have already suffered a setback this summer after Victor Munoz snubbed a move in favour of switching to Liverpool. The Magpies had been favourites to land his services after reaching an agreement, but he opted for the North West to unite with fellow Spaniard Andoni Iraola.
