Man Utd transfer news: Zirkzee exit close as Matanovic eyed
Man Utd: Zirkzee exit close as Matanovic targeted

Manchester United are running out of time, with less than a week until the transfer window slams shut. United initially focused their early recruitment efforts on revamping their midfield and have brought Carlos Baleba into their engine room.

Yet Carrick may be seeking to secure reinforcements across other positions following the club's opening defeat to Hull City. The Reds have been linked with Freiburg striker Igor Matanovic. Benjamin Sesko remains one of the few natural centre-forwards within Carrick's options, while Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha are also able to deputise.

Meanwhile, United forward Joshua Zirkzee could potentially leave Old Trafford. Here, Daily Star Sport explores the biggest transfer stories surrounding the club.

Striker 'target' emerges

While Zirkzee is said to be moving towards an exit, Matanovic could occupy his role in Carrick's squad. The 23-year-old bagged 15 goals across all competitions for the German side last season, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Gazzetta dello Sport suggests that United are vying to secure the Croatia international. The Reds are understood to be accompanied by Spurs in the race for his signature.

Additionally, Fiorentina are said to be considering an "ambitious" move for Matanovic as they search for Moise Kean's replacement. Matanovic transferred to Freiburg from Eintracht Frankfurt last summer.

Joshua Zirkzee 'closing in' on exit

Fiorentina are also said to be holding talks over a switch for United striker Joshua Zirkzee. The Dutchman has found it difficult to secure a consistent place in the club's forward line since his move from Bologna in 2024.

Gazzetta reports that Fiorentina are "in negotiations" over a £4.2million loan arrangement for Zirkzee, with the possibility to make the transfer permanent next summer. The Serie A outfit are understood to have identified the United forward as a perfect "ideal replacement" for Kean, who looks set to join Como.

Fiorentina are said to face competition from Juventus for Zirkzee's services, though La Viola are eager to step up their chase while Juve concentrate on offloading Jonathan David. Gazzetta adds that Fiorentina are "closing in" on a deal to bring Zirkzee in as Kean's replacement.

The 25-year-old has found the net nine times in 75 outings for United, having joined the club for £36.5m after an outstanding stint with Bologna.
