Manchester United have received a fresh update on Lewis Hall after failing to sign the Newcastle left-back in the summer transfer window. Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle has issued what has been interpreted as a hands-off warning to United, praising the £75million-rated defender and suggesting he wants him to stay at St James' Park for the long term.
Jaissle praises Hall amid United interest
Hall was reportedly United's top target for the left-back position, but the club did not add a new name in that role before Tuesday's deadline. Jaissle responded by heaping praise on his player ahead of any future attempts from United to sign him.
"He's a huge, huge potential player," said Jaissle in a press conference this week. "He's delivering already on a high level but we all know that there's much more to come. We're really excited that he is a part of that team and hopefully also in the long term."
United's failure to sign a left-back this summer suggests the club will make a renewed attempt to strengthen the role next year. However, Newcastle will again look to resist any efforts aimed at their talent.
Hall's strong start to the season
Hall has started the season promisingly despite giving away a late penalty in the 2-2 draw against Liverpool on the opening weekend. He followed up with a star performance in Newcastle's 2-0 win at Tottenham one week later and will have a big role to play under Jaissle this term.
Redknapp lauds ex-United target Sangare
Jamie Redknapp has hinted United missed a trick by not signing Mamadou Sangare this summer. The Mali international was one of the names linked with a move to Old Trafford as Michael Carrick completed an overhaul of his midfield.
Sangare, 24, ultimately ended up at Brentford after completing a club-record £39million departure from Lens. He has transitioned seamlessly to the Premier League, leaving Redknapp of the impression he will soon be worth nine figures.
"The best business I like is Sangare at Brentford," said Redknapp. "I think he's going to be a wonderful signing for them. He'll probably be worth £120million in a few years. He'll go to Brentford, establish himself as a top player."
The Sky Sports pundit went on to clarify his view that Sangare looks like the best Premier League signing of the summer. At £40m, he could have been a cheaper alternative to the likes of £50m Andrey Santos or £70m Baleba.
To his credit, Santos has looked well worth the money himself so far, while Baleba is still waiting to make his impact in midfield. Brentford continue to demonstrate their transfer market nous after seemingly recruiting yet another superstar-in-the-making.
