Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keen on signing Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford this summer, while also attempting to hijack United's move for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes. According to reports, Spurs are looking to build on their Premier League survival and transform into European contenders under manager Roberto De Zerbi.
Tottenham's Ambitious Summer Plans
After finishing 17th and escaping relegation on the final day of last season, Tottenham have shown renewed ambition in the transfer market. They have already signed Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for £52 million and are in talks with Newcastle over a potential deal for Italy international Sandro Tonali, which could be worth close to £100 million. Additionally, Spurs are considering rivalling Manchester United for West Ham's 21-year-old midfielder Mateus Fernandes, as well as attempting to sign Rashford from Old Trafford.
Rashford's Potential Move
Manchester United are willing to sell Rashford this summer but only if the price is right. The club has set a £40 million fee for the 28-year-old, though his £325,000-a-week salary is a significant obstacle for potential buyers. United may have to negotiate on the price, but they could offer Tottenham a sweetener if Spurs cool their interest in Fernandes. This might already be the case if Tottenham successfully signs Tonali.
Fernandes Transfer Battle
Mateus Fernandes is United's primary target this summer, and the Portuguese midfielder is expected to be their second signing of the window. However, United are reluctant to meet West Ham's current asking price. To secure a lower fee, they need a clear run at the player without competing bids. There has been interest from Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, and Arsenal, but United have been the most active. West Ham, who reported a £104 million loss in their latest financial results, are keen to spark a bidding war to drive up Fernandes's price. With the club preparing for life in the Championship, sales are necessary, and Fernandes is their most sellable asset.
Potential Bargaining Chip
United could leverage Tottenham's interest in Rashford to ensure they are the only club negotiating for Fernandes. By offering Spurs a favorable deal for Rashford, they might convince Tottenham to drop their pursuit of Fernandes. This would allow United to negotiate a lower fee with West Ham, who need to sell quickly to comply with financial regulations.
