Manchester United are reportedly considering taking legal action in the event that JJ Gabriel leaves the club. The 15-year-old informed the Red Devils of his desire to leave Old Trafford last month, which would see him cancel his registration with the club.
United were surprised by Gabriel's decision to seek a move away, with the teenager set to feature in the Carabao Cup against Tottenham Hotspur before the news emerged of his wish to leave. Gabriel would have become United's youngest-ever player had he featured against Spurs, but he has not made an appearance for the club since.
Contract situation and overseas interest
United still believe the situation could be resolved, with Gabriel having time left on his contract. The 2010-born star cannot be de-registered without mutual consent from all parties, though he can enter negotiations for a move overseas once he turns 16 next week, facilitated by his Irish passport.
Should he transfer abroad, United would only receive a modest compensation fee. Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich are reportedly keen on signing Gabriel.
Regulatory and legal action considered
The Sun has reported that United are contemplating regulatory and possibly legal action against anyone who might negotiate or facilitate the England Under-17s' departure from Old Trafford.
Gabriel's representative Ali Barat obtained permission from the Football Association (FA) to represent minors after it emerged that the gifted midfielder wished to leave United. Barat's agency, Epic Sports, facilitated Denzel Dumfries' transfer to Real Madrid and Nicolas Jackson's move to Aston Villa during the summer, and have since arranged discussions with Los Blancos and Bayern on behalf of Gabriel's representatives.
Training abroad and Carrick's call for calm
Gabriel has been training overseas this week after making it evident he does not envisage remaining at United. He has been working out at the same Barcelona facility where he previously spent time ahead of pre-season.
Despite mounting speculation, Michael Carrick called for composure when questioned about the midfielder last month. He said: "I'll just repeat what I said [earlier this week]: he's a young boy, it's important we don't put anything out here, the exposure and scrutiny we have to be careful. We have to be sensible and think about him. The situation will work itself out."
Gabriel's most recent outing for United was in a 5-0 victory over Sabah in the UEFA Youth League last month.
