Man United Track World Cup Star as £80m Transfer Nears

Manchester United are gearing up for a hectic summer transfer window as the club looks to overhaul its squad. Manager Michael Carrick is keen to strengthen his team ahead of Champions League football next season.

Midfield Focus After Casemiro Exit

Midfield is a key area for United following Casemiro's departure at the end of the season. An agreement has been reached for Atalanta's Ederson, who recently earned a Brazil World Cup call-up, but additional signings are being pursued.

United have shown interest in Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson, who has already attracted two offers from Manchester City. The 23-year-old is expected to feature prominently for England at the World Cup as competition for his services heats up.

West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes has also been linked with a move to Old Trafford after the Hammers' relegation. United face competition from Arsenal and Real Madrid for the 21-year-old.

Meanwhile, United are reportedly targeting Bayern Munich defender Kim Min-jae, who is representing South Korea at the World Cup.

£80m Transfer Boost

United have reportedly moved ahead of Arsenal in the race to sign Mateus Fernandes. The Portugal international scored three goals and provided four assists in 36 matches for West Ham but could not prevent relegation.

The Times reports that United are optimistic about finalising a deal for Fernandes and are leading Arsenal in the chase. The 21-year-old could command a fee approaching £80 million, just a year after his £38 million move from Southampton.

Arsenal are said to be reluctant to meet West Ham's asking price, which could boost United's chances. However, Real Madrid may yet derail their pursuit, with new manager Jose Mourinho keen to make Fernandes a priority target.

Kim Min-jae Re-emerges as Target

United are reportedly monitoring how Bayern centre-back Kim Min-jae performs at the World Cup. The 29-year-old played the full game as South Korea beat Czechia 2-1 on Friday morning.

German publication TZ reports that Kim is on United's radar, noting that the club have dedicated time to scouting the defender. Juventus are also interested in Kim, who joined Bayern in 2023.

United were linked with Kim before his move from Napoli three years ago. He featured 37 times last season as Bayern won the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal.

Carrick has several centre-backs in his squad, including Harry Maguire, Leny Yoro, and Ayden Heaven. Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt were hampered by injuries last season, and the manager hopes for a consistent pairing next term.
