Manchester United are reportedly unable to offer Crysencio Summerville his desired squad number if he completes a summer move from West Ham United. The Dutch winger, who wears the number seven shirt at the London Stadium, would find that number already taken at Old Trafford by Mason Mount.
Summerville's Transfer Links
The 24-year-old has been linked with a switch to Manchester United following West Ham's relegation from the Premier League. A fee of around £50million has been suggested, although the Hammers are reluctant to sell a player also attracting interest from Roma. Summerville took the number seven shirt at West Ham after joining from Leeds United in 2024, following the departure of previous holder James Ward-Prowse on loan.
Number Seven Already Occupied
At Manchester United, the number seven shirt is currently held by Mason Mount, who took it in 2023. Previously, it was worn by Cristiano Ronaldo until his second departure in the 2022/23 season. This leaves Summerville unable to claim his preferred number if the transfer proceeds.
Similarly, other potential targets face number conflicts. Ederson would not be able to take his preferred number 13, currently held by Patrick Dorgu, while Sandro Tonali is unlikely to wrest the number eight from Bruno Fernandes.
Alternative Options for Summerville
Several other squad numbers could be available to Summerville. The number 24, which he wears for the Netherlands at the World Cup, currently belongs to Andre Onana, but the goalkeeper has been tipped to leave permanently this summer. The number 10, worn by Summerville in his final Leeds season, is occupied by Matheus Cunha and unlikely to become free. He could revert to the number 38 he wore in his first two years at Leeds if current holder Jack Fletcher changes his number.
Other possibilities include the vacant number 12, left open after Tyrell Malacia's exit, and Casemiro's old number 18, which could become available after the Brazilian's departure. The number nine shirt also remained free last season after Rasmus Hojlund's exit, but it remains uncertain whether another player will take it before a Summerville deal can be completed.
Other West Ham Players Linked
Summerville is one of several West Ham players linked with a move to Old Trafford following the club's relegation. The Dutch winger impressed in the second half of last season, helping the Hammers come close to survival, and scored on his World Cup debut against Japan. Midfielder Mateus Fernandes is also in high demand, though an £80million asking price may deter suitors. Reports have also mentioned Jarrod Bowen and El-Hadji Malick Diouf as Nuno Espirito Santo's side determines who will stay for a Championship promotion push.
