Manchester City have agreed a £10million deal to sign 16-year-old Jeremy Monga from Leicester City, a record fee for a player his age. The Blues are expected to finalise the transfer in the coming days, securing the teenage sensation who has already made 37 senior appearances for Leicester, including seven in the Premier League.
How City beat Arsenal to the signing
City had been monitoring Monga for some time and were among several top clubs interested last summer. However, they initially held off, and Monga signed a one-year scholarship with Leicester that would convert to a professional contract when he turned 17. That contract meant a transfer fee was required for his departure. Arsenal appeared to be leading the race after holding talks this summer, but City, backed by new boss Enzo Maresca, moved late and struck a deal with Leicester, prompting the Gunners to step back.
Maresca's influence and City's youth strategy
Maresca played a key role in accelerating City's interest, having been Leicester manager during Monga's development in the 2023/24 campaign. City's commitment to securing the best young talent, combined with their belief that Monga has first-team potential, drove the deal. Monga becomes the latest promising youngster signed by City, joining Claudio Echeverri, Vitor Reis, Juma Bah, Sverre Nypan, and Mathys Detourbet, who arrived from Troyes and subsequently joined Monaco on loan.
What's next for Monga
Once the deal is official, Monga is likely to tour with City this summer. With several World Cup stars absent for three matches in Asia, he will have an opportunity to settle in and showcase his ability. However, he is not expected to be first-team ready immediately. He will train with the senior squad but is likely to play academy minutes as he adapts to life at an elite Premier League club.
City's ongoing search for a winger
Monga's arrival does not address City's need for a winger. The club is actively seeking to strengthen on the flank, and that desire will only grow if Savinho departs. Tottenham remain interested in the Brazil international, but no deal has been concluded, and Spurs have spent elsewhere. City may also consider adding a central player and adapting. Jeremy Doku, Antoine Semenyo, Phil Foden, and Rayan Cherki are all capable of playing wide, though Foden and Cherki prefer a number 10 role. The summer tour could also give Ryan McAidoo a chance to stake a claim for regular first-team involvement.
Monga's background and record
Monga has played most of his football at Leicester on the left wing but can also play centrally or on the right. He made his debut at just 15, coming off the bench in a Premier League game against Newcastle United in April 2025. Only Arsenal pair Max Dowman and Ethan Nwaneri have appeared in a top-flight fixture at a younger age. According to sources, the £10million fee is a statement of intent for a player of his age, reflecting City's belief in his potential.
