Liverpool Join Race for West Ham's Fernandes

Liverpool have reportedly entered the race to sign West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, joining Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur in the chase for the Portugal international. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Reds made a call to West Ham two weeks ago to inquire about the 21-year-old's availability and potential cost.

Liverpool's Transfer Activity

Liverpool have already made one signing this summer, having completed a £34.5million deal for Victor Munoz from Osasuna. The Reds are expected to be active in the transfer market as manager Andoni Iraola prepares for the new season, which includes a pre-season tour of the United States.

While Liverpool have been heavily linked with forwards such as RB Leipzig's Yan Diomande, Fernandes represents a midfield target. Romano revealed on the Born 'N Red YouTube channel: "Liverpool made a call two weeks ago to understand the situation of Mateus Fernandes at West Ham, to understand the price and conditions, but they didn't return with any bid or any official conversation."

Fernandes' Price Tag and Competition

Romano added that the player is expected to be expensive, with a fee of more than £85million likely required to secure his signature. Tottenham and Manchester United are also monitoring the situation, but both clubs are currently occupied with other deals. "The player is going to be expensive, more than £85million. It means Liverpool are working on midfielders," Romano said.

Curtis Jones Future Uncertain

Liverpool's midfield situation is further complicated by speculation surrounding Curtis Jones. Inter Milan have expressed interest in the 25-year-old, but the Reds rejected a £21.7million bid from the Serie A club over the weekend. Liverpool value Jones at closer to £35million and are holding out for a higher fee.

With Liverpool's summer business already underway, the potential signing of Fernandes would signal a significant investment in midfield. However, no official bid has been made, and the club's focus may shift as the window progresses.
