Jaguar has officially confirmed the name of its highly anticipated all-electric vehicle as the Jaguar Type 01, a prediction made by The Independent two years ago. The rebirth of Jaguar made global headlines in 2024, from the unveiling of new branding and logo in a controversial video to the Jaguar Type 00 design vision concept showcased during Miami Art Week. It is fair to say that Jaguar had not received such attention in years, and not all of it was positive.
Exclusive Preview of the Type 01
Our expert render offers the best glimpse yet at what the production model might look like, based on months of clue-hunting and a sneak preview of the camouflaged car. The Type 01 name appears subtly on the parallel line strikethrough graphic where the bonnet meets the windscreen, and will also be seen on the camouflaged car on the streets of Monaco ahead of the Formula E race.
Heritage and Meaning Behind the Name
Jaguar Type names date back to the C, D, and E-Type sports cars of the 1950s and 1960s, with the S-Type and X-Type used later. The new Type 01 unites the brand's history of innovation with the most advanced Jaguar ever. The '0' represents zero tailpipe emissions from the electric drivetrain, while the '1' signifies the first model of Jaguar's new all-electric era.
Rawdon Glover, Jaguar managing director, stated: "We have reimagined Jaguar for a new era, with inspiration from what has gone before. The Type 01 name is part of that story – for me, the zero also signifies a complete brand reset, and the '1', our first car for a new chapter, a 'one of a kind.'"
Design and Styling
Jaguar's former chief creative officer, Gerry McGovern, revealed the Type 00 concept in December 2024, hinting that its striking styling would make it to production. The proportions of the concept, with a dramatic long bonnet and sloping roofline, will carry over to the production Type 01. Key design elements expected to be retained include the strikethrough graphic replacing a traditional grille, slim headlights, subtle use of the reinvented Jaguar leaper, and soft colour palettes like Miami Pink and London Blue.
The front end resembles the Type 00 concept, with a flat, wide front dominated by the bold strikethrough grille. The render makes the car look more production-ready, keeping headlights slim while allowing space for advanced LED projector beam units. The new Jaguar logo is expected to sit in the centre.
The long bonnet remains, with the Jaguar leaper on a bronze panel on the squared-off sides, potentially integrated into an EV charging port behind the large wheels. Expect 22- or 23-inch wheels with the J and R maker's mark in the hub. The butterfly doors from the concept are unlikely for the four-door GT, but could appear on a future coupé.
Practicality and Interior
The production Type 01 will be more practical, with space for at least two rear passengers. The sloping roof may be less angled than the concept's, but the shape will stay true to the Type 00. A glassless rear, similar to the Polestar 4, allows for better headroom, with cameras and a screen replacing the rear-view mirror for visibility.
At the rear, lights are expected to be hidden until lit, a feature pioneered by McGovern on the latest Range Rover. The strikethrough graphic will feature prominently, though lights may move closer to the corners than on the concept.
Performance and Range
The Type 01 features a new body architecture with tri-motor technology delivering over 1,000bhp and more than 1,300Nm of torque. It sits on the bespoke Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA), offering four-wheel drive and advanced computer trickery for a true Jaguar sporting feel.
Jaguar targets a range of 478 miles and super-fast charging, adding up to 200 miles in 15 minutes. Multiple battery options are expected, with only the largest achieving that range.
Pricing and Availability
Jaguar MD Rawdon Glover revealed to The Independent that prices will start at just under £100,000, with the average selling price well above six figures. Jaguar is reducing dealer numbers and opening clubhouse showrooms, the first in Paris's Golden Triangle.
The Type 01 is not expected to go on sale until 2028, with an SUV and sporty crossover to follow later. Jaguar's team promises that everything the brand does will stay true to its 'copy nothing' philosophy of bold exuberance, ensuring more surprises ahead.
