With just four months until Apple's next iPhone launch, leaks about the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are intensifying. While upgrades may not be revolutionary, intriguing camera improvements and potential pricing stability are generating buzz.
Pricing: No Hike Expected
Recent reports from analyst Jeff Pu suggest Apple will adopt an aggressive pricing strategy for the iPhone 18 Pro, keeping starting prices unchanged or only slightly increasing from the iPhone 17 Pro lineup. This comes despite rising DRAM and NAND storage costs that have affected rivals like Samsung. Apple is reportedly negotiating favorable memory chip deals with Samsung and SK Hynix while reducing costs on other components.
Release Date: September 2026
Apple is expected to shift its launch strategy, unveiling only the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max alongside a foldable iPhone in September 2026, with the standard iPhone 18 delayed to spring 2027. The announcement is likely on September 8 or 9, with pre-orders on September 11 and release on September 18.
Design and Display
The iPhone 18 Pro will retain a similar design to its predecessor but feature a smaller Dynamic Island, reportedly 35% narrower (13.5mm vs. 20.7mm). Leaker Ice Universe suggests the bezels remain unchanged. The Face ID flood illuminator may move under the display, though under-screen Face ID is not expected until at least 2027. The Pro Max could be slightly thicker and heavier, reaching 243g.
Colors: Dark Cherry and More
Apple is testing a dark cherry colorway, described as closer to wine than fruit punch, along with light blue, dark grey, and silver options. The two-tone back glass design from the iPhone 17 Pro may be minimized for a more uniform look.
Camera Upgrades: Variable Aperture
The biggest camera change is a variable aperture on the main rear lens, enabling DSLR-like control over light intake. The telephoto lens may also gain a larger aperture. Samsung is reportedly developing a three-layer stacked sensor for improved responsiveness and reduced noise.
Specs and Performance
The A20 chip, built on TSMC's 2nm process, promises up to 15% faster performance and 30% better efficiency. It may integrate RAM directly for enhanced Apple Intelligence features. The C2 modem will improve 5G and potentially support satellite internet. Battery capacity could reach 5,100-5,200mAh in the Pro Max.
Stay tuned for more updates as the launch approaches.
