Newcastle United's new goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen has revealed that he was swayed by manager Eddie Howe's personal touch during the transfer process. The 20-year-old French shot-stopper joined the Magpies from Reims for £18.5 million, and he is eager to compete for the number one spot at St James' Park.
Howe's Personal Approach
Jaouen disclosed that Howe called him multiple times to express his desire to develop the young keeper. "I had him on the phone a few times," Jaouen said. "He expressed that he was willing to develop me, to talk to me and pay attention. To hear that was part of my decision. It made me feel at home straight away, even before I'd signed."
The 6ft 6in goalkeeper, who has yet to play a top-flight game in France, describes himself as a "modern goalkeeper" and is determined to make an impact. He hopes Howe can help him gain Premier League experience, which he calls "the toughest league in the world."
Uncertain Future for Nick Pope
With current number one Nick Pope facing an uncertain future, Newcastle are also in the market for another senior stopper. It remains to be seen how quickly Jaouen will get his chance, but a strong pre-season could propel him into contention for the starting role.
Jaouen emphasized his ambition: "I want to achieve a lot of things, I want to be at the highest level personally and bring the club to the highest level too. If the club can be at the level the fans are, it can be good."
Penalty Specialist
Jaouen also hinted at a special skill: taking penalties. "I like penalties - scoring and saving them," he told NUFC TV. "I hope I don't have to score some penalties, but if I can save penalties here, it will be great."
Jaouen's arrival signals the next phase of Howe's evolution at Newcastle, as the manager looks to build a squad capable of competing at the highest level.
