Google has announced a range of new features for Android phones, including the Gemini Intelligence AI system, a tool to help users avoid distracting apps, and a new line of laptops called Googlebooks. These upgrades will be rolled out over the next year for high-end devices from Samsung and Google's Pixel line.
Gemini Intelligence
Gemini Intelligence combines Google's top AI tools into a single system that can automate tasks by interacting directly with apps on a user's smartphone. This includes ordering takeaway, turning a grocery list into a shopping basket, or finding a class book list in an email and ordering the right texts. Gemini will queue up orders for user confirmation. From late June, Chrome auto browse will bring similar automation to websites, such as booking tickets or finding parking spots. Autofill will also be upgraded to fill in complex forms by pulling information from apps and services. Generative user interfaces can create home screen widgets through simple instructions, like listing local toddler-friendly events or weather conditions for cycling routes.
Rambler Dictation Upgrade
Google's Gboard dictation system is getting an AI upgrade called Rambler, which edits speech into concise sentences, removing redundant words, umms, and errors, while allowing mid-speech language switching.
More Android Upgrades
Pause Point is a new tool that helps users avoid distracting apps. Tapping on an offending app prompts breathing exercises, favorite photos, or more productive apps. App timers can limit doom scrolling. Quick Share compatibility with Apple's AirDrop will expand from Pixel to Samsung, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Honor phones. Quick Share can also share files with Apple devices using QR codes and the cloud, or via apps like WhatsApp. Instagram on Android gets on-device editing tools, including a one-tap smart enhancement for photos and video, sound separation to remove background noise, ultra HDR capture, video stabilization, and night-sight integration. Screen Reactions will record a clip of a user and their screen simultaneously for instant reaction videos. Google has also redesigned all 4,000 emojis to be 3D on Pixel devices.
Android Auto Redesigned
Android Auto is getting a makeover with smoother animations, bolder fonts, colors, and wallpapers. It will allow widgets and shortcuts on the car's display and integrate Gemini Intelligence. Video playback is allowed when parked, switching to audio-only when moving. Google Maps gets a new immersive navigation look with 3D views of buildings, bridges, and terrain, plus overlays for lane guidance, traffic lights, and road signs.
New Googlebook Laptops in Autumn
Google is launching a new category of laptops called Googlebooks, replacing Chromebooks. They will feature the Chrome browser, Android apps, and Gemini Intelligence. Manufacturers include Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. The machines will have various sizes with a "glowbar" on the lid, similar to the original Chromebook Pixel. They offer seamless connectivity with Android devices. Gemini brings proactive AI, including a "magic pointer" that turns the mouse cursor into an AI pointer with contextually aware help. Models, prices, and more information will be available in autumn.
