Speaking to the Press Association in Kilmarnock, Swinney emphasized the Scottish Government's readiness to assist Glasgow City Council with the immediate, significant, and unexpected financial consequences of the incident. He stated, "The Government recognises that there will be a significant financial cost arising out of this incident. We're in the early days of all of that. But I want to signal our willingness to support Glasgow City Council and to support them financially in dealing with the consequences."
The First Minister plans to visit the scene in Glasgow city centre shortly, highlighting the severity of the fire and expressing gratitude to the emergency services for their rapid and effective response. He noted, "The fact that there are no serious injuries reported is a huge relief, but the damage is enormous and the disruption will be significant to the travelling public and around the city centre."
Emergency Services Praised for Bravery
Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar also addressed the fire during an event in Glasgow, commending the emergency services for their bravery. He said, "First and foremost, I want to say thank you to the emergency services for their rapid response. I don't think you can emphasise enough how brave these individuals are." Sarwar added that it was heartbreaking to witness the destruction in an area he knows well.
The fire caused a partial building collapse, leading to the closure of several city centre streets. Sarwar emphasized the need to support local businesses and ensure site safety to restore travel operations promptly.
