Final Fantasy XIV Online director Naoki 'Yoshi-P' Yoshida has expressed openness to the idea of a single-player spin-off of the popular MMO, but only if the right pitch comes along. While the game can be played solo, it is fundamentally an online experience best enjoyed with millions of players worldwide.
Yoshi-P's Stance on a Single-Player FFXIV
During a press conference at the Final Fantasy Fan Fest in Anaheim, Yoshi-P was asked whether he had ever considered creating a single-player version of Final Fantasy XIV. He replied: 'Yes, I've thought about it.' He acknowledged that many players dismiss online Final Fantasy games as not being 'real' Final Fantasy titles. 'There are still a lot of people out there who look at an online Final Fantasy and they say an online Final Fantasy is not a Final Fantasy,' he said.
Challenges and Considerations
However, Yoshi-P highlighted a significant obstacle: the only team capable of producing a high-quality standalone FFXIV game is the current development team, which is fully occupied with the MMO. 'While I do love to consider making a single-player standalone Final Fantasy XIV, unfortunately the only team who could potentially make the best standalone FFXIV game is the current FFXIV team,' he explained.
He also expressed concern that the MMO's community might react negatively to a spin-off project. 'But then if that happens, I'm sure FFXIV players would look at that project and go: "Instead of focusing on some spin-off project, you should work more on the main actual FFXIV game."'
Open to Pitches
Despite these hurdles, Yoshi-P has not ruled out the possibility entirely. He actively welcomes pitches from external developers or teams. 'On the flip side, if there are people who are interested in creating a standalone FFXIV, if you have any friends or know of companies who really want to take on that challenge we would love to hear from them,' he said. 'I'm half joking, half serious. If somebody is passionate enough to helm that project, we would love to hear from you.'
This openness suggests that a single-player spin-off could become a reality if the right proposal emerges. Meanwhile, Square Enix has announced the Evercold expansion for FFXIV, set for January 2027, along with an Evangelion crossover and a Nintendo Switch 2 port featuring Joy-Con mouse support.
