Electric Car Owners Reveal Major Savings and Ease of Switching to EVs
Drivers have shared their experiences of running electric cars, highlighting substantial financial benefits and enhanced driving comfort. Many report saving hundreds of pounds annually while enjoying quieter, smoother journeys compared to traditional petrol vehicles.
Personal Stories of EV Adoption
Peter Lawley, a 74-year-old from Telford, Shropshire, purchased a Skoda Elroq as his first electric vehicle. He expressed surprise at how straightforward the transition has been. "What stood out straight away was how simple it is to drive," said Peter. "There are no complicated settings to worry about, and in town, the 'B' mode allows for almost one-pedal driving, which makes everyday journeys very easy." With a home charger installed and smart charging, he anticipates saving approximately £50 to £60 per month on fuel compared to petrol. "At 74, it's been a bit of a learning curve, but if I can make the switch and find it easy to live with, almost anyone can."
Dave Wynn from Cardiff opted for a second-hand Kia e-Niro and has been impressed by the upfront and ongoing savings. "The equivalent petrol car with similar mileage was around £1,500 more expensive, so going electric saved me money up front," he explained. "I used to spend about 12p a mile on petrol, now I'm spending closer to 2p a mile charging at home. I also love never having to visit petrol stations again." Dave recommends used EVs for budget-conscious drivers, noting a 100 per cent endorsement for the switch.
Enhanced Accessibility and Further Savings
For Paul Hayes and his disabled partner, Clare, from Hillsborough, Sheffield, an electric car has improved daily mobility. They purchased a five-year-old Hyundai Kona with a 64kWh battery after researching models with at least 250 miles of range. "It's given us exactly the confidence we needed," said Paul. "My partner can now drive long distances comfortably to visit her mother, and the EV's smooth, gear-free driving makes a real difference for her disability. She also appreciates being able to pre-heat the car on cold mornings."
Paul also highlighted significant cost reductions, stating, "In the first year alone, we've saved about £1,300 – roughly 10 per cent of the purchase price – through lower fuel and servicing costs." Charging at home costs under 2p per mile, compared to around 13.5p per mile in their previous petrol car, with annual dealer service fees at £80, including AA cover.
Industry Insights and Market Trends
According to Electric Vehicles UK (EVUK), an automotive industry lobby group, the used EV market is becoming more accessible. Two in five used electric cars now cost under £20,000, with some available for less than £5,000. EV owners using off-peak tariffs can save up to £1,400 annually compared to petrol. The average range of new electric cars is 230 miles, equivalent to about two weeks of driving for most people, and the UK boasts over 87,000 public chargers, with a new one installed every 35 minutes.
Tanya Sinclair, CEO of EVUK, commented, "These people are not tech enthusiasts or millionaires, they're ordinary drivers who've switched because of cost, comfort and convenience. What their stories show is that electric cars can be cheaper to run, easy to live with, and more than capable of doing the school run, the weekly shop and a European road trip." She added, "For many households, especially those who can charge at home, the question is no longer 'can an EV cope with my life?' but 'how much could I save by switching?'"
Last year saw record EV sales, with 473,348 new electric cars purchased, marking a 23.9 per cent increase, and 274,815 used EVs changing hands, a 45.7 per cent rise, indicating growing adoption across the UK.
