Emirates has issued a significant update for its passengers, heralding a new era of in-flight connectivity. The airline, which carries hundreds of thousands of UK passengers annually through airports including London Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, and Glasgow, has completed the first installation of next-generation Starlink Wi-Fi on its Airbus A380 aircraft.
Revolutionary Connectivity at 40,000 Feet
Emirates operates the 615-seater A380 on routes such as London Heathrow to Dubai, offering over one million seats annually. The newly installed Starlink system, featuring three antennas per aircraft, improves bandwidth a thousand-fold compared to the first-generation systems that offered less than 1 Mbps. The airline describes the experience as "better than at home", enabling passengers to stream, game, browse, and work seamlessly throughout their journey.
Installation and Rollout
The first Emirates A380 equipped with Starlink returned to Dubai this week after installation and certification in Newquay. More A380s are scheduled for accelerated installation throughout 2026, with the service complimentary for all customers. Future plans include Live TV streaming over Starlink, initially on personal devices and later integrated into seatback screens.
Announcing the update on X, Emirates stated: "Our A380 is entering a new era with next-gen @Starlink Wi-Fi onboard. Ultra-fast, complimentary connectivity across all cabins, customers can stream, browse and stay connected seamlessly at 40,000 feet. A fully connected journey, redefined."
Passenger Reactions
Passengers have expressed enthusiasm, with one commenting: "Let's go. The old system was under 1 Mbps." Another added: "Please don't ever ground this airplane." The Emirates A380, the world's largest passenger airliner, is renowned for its luxury amenities, including shower spas and onboard bars.
