Emirates has unveiled a new seat feature designed to improve sleep quality for passengers, with adjustable headrests that fold forward to create a cushioned surface for napping. The upgrade has been implemented on 95 aircraft—42 Airbus A380s and 53 Boeing 777s—representing more than one-third of the airline's fleet.
Social Media Buzz
Instagram user @12cities.co posted a video demonstrating the headrest, which garnered over 26,000 likes in less than 24 hours. 'Emirates just did what?' she wrote, captioning the clip. 'Best flight of my life ngl.' The video shows her pulling down the headrest, shaped like a sturdy neck pillow, and resting her head on it with a smile.
Commenters quickly dubbed the innovation a 'game-changer' and 'great and awesome for travellers.' One remarked, 'Finally someone thought about passengers' comfort on long flights.' Another added, 'This is genius,' while a third said, 'Love the upgrade.'
Premium Economy Upgrades
The influencer appeared to be flying economy, but premium economy seats have also received significant enhancements, featuring 'full leg and foot rests and six-way adjustable headrests.'
Sir Tim Clark, Emirates Airline president, stated: 'The Emirates retrofit programme revolves around the central premise that we will offer our customers a truly elevated experience every time they choose to travel with us. To this end, our engineering team has been working continuously and at pace in close collaboration with an ecosystem of partners and suppliers to meticulously refresh and integrate the best-in-class products to each aircraft in the programme. Our retrofit programme has raised the bar at every step, in terms of complexity, scale and detailed craftsmanship.'
Hygiene Concerns
Despite the positive reception, some passengers raised hygiene issues. One commenter said, 'Omg I'm not putting my face on that without THOROUGHLY disinfecting it because omg.' Another wrote, 'Bare face on a public surface, no chance,' while a third pleaded, 'Think of the germs.' Others suggested wiping the headrest with antibacterial wipes before use.
Alternative Sleep Hacks
For those not flying Emirates, a TikTok travel hack involves raising knees to the chest, placing feet together on the seat, and securing the seatbelt around the ankles. This position allows passengers to rest their head on their knees for sleep. Former Emirates flight attendant Bella Sapsworth also advised: 'Recline your seat. You pay for a reclining seat – so use it!'
