Joby Aviation’s fully electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft has been conducting test flights around New York City, promising to cut travel time from JFK Airport to Manhattan to just 10 minutes. The company claims the aircraft, which can reach speeds of 200mph, will offer a quieter and more environmentally friendly alternative to helicopters.
Eric Allison, chief product officer at Joby Aviation, emphasised that the aircraft is not a helicopter. It uses six propellers that tilt for vertical takeoff and forward flight, relying on wings for lift. Allison noted the aircraft is significantly quieter than helicopters, producing around 45 decibels compared to over 100 decibels from conventional helicopters.
Joby hopes its lower noise levels and zero emissions will appeal to New Yorkers and help overcome opposition from anti-helicopter groups like Stop the Chop, which campaigns against non-essential helicopter flights. The group highlights that each helicopter produces 950lb of CO2 per hour, whereas Joby’s aircraft produces none.
However, the aircraft still generates noticeable noise during takeoff and landing, though far less than a helicopter. Joby is currently seeking certification from the Federal Aviation Administration and expects the aircraft to be available for commercial use by 2028, with pricing comparable to a premium car service.
