Dream Man Utd XI for Premier League opener with £87m signings

Michael Carrick will be determined to claim all three points when Manchester United face Hull City on the opening day of the 2026/27 Premier League campaign. The journey to the MKM Stadium will set the tone for the initial phase of the season, offering the side an opportunity to build momentum before a gruelling campaign.

Carrick's exceptional performance last term enabled United to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2023. He has an impressive record since being promoted to interim boss in January, winning 12 of 17 league matches and losing just twice, for a win rate of 70.6 per cent. The former midfielder was awarded a permanent contract by club officials last month.

However, expectations will be significantly greater this season for Carrick now that he occupies the role permanently. He will be required to deliver comparable outcomes over an extended timeframe, while incorporating a number of fresh faces. United are expected to be busy in the coming weeks during the transfer window, with numerous targets under discussion.

Ederson debut

Brazil star Ederson is poised to become United's first signing of the summer. Earlier this month, the Reds reached an agreement with Atalanta to secure the midfielder's services, in a deal thought to be worth around £35m plus £3.8m in add-ons. Ederson himself recently acknowledged the transfer is "practically almost all sorted". With Casemiro having departed and Manuel Ugarte's future still uncertain, the 26-year-old is widely expected to form one half of United's midfield partnership on the opening day of the new season, as he prepares to make his mark on English football.

He received a late call-up to Brazil's World Cup squad as cover for the injured Wesley. Ederson marked his World Cup debut with a substitute appearance in the 3-0 triumph over Haiti on Friday night, ensuring he will arrive at Old Trafford match-ready when the new campaign gets underway.

Fernandes alternative

It is no secret that United are eager to recruit another midfielder to line up alongside Ederson in the engine room this summer. West Ham's Mateus Fernandes has emerged as the Reds' primary midfield target in recent weeks, having impressed before the Hammers' relegation from the top flight. However, despite meeting several of Carrick's requirements, the 21-year-old is expected to command a hefty fee of around £80m. United are unwilling to be priced out of a deal, having already walked away from a move for England midfielder Elliot Anderson for precisely the same reason.

Should they deem Fernandes too costly at that price, Felix Nmecha of Borussia Dortmund represents an excellent alternative. The 25-year-old, who progressed through Manchester City's academy, is currently shining for the German national team at the World Cup. His assured performances in central midfield are exactly what Carrick requires going into next season. A transfer fee of approximately £52m is reportedly sufficient to convince Dortmund to sell Nmecha, while allowing United to deploy the remaining Fernandes budget to bolster other areas of the squad.

Summerville benched

Fernandes hasn't been the sole West Ham star drawing attention from United. It is understood that Netherlands left winger Crysencio Summerville has also captured the interest of Old Trafford chiefs. The Hammers reportedly must generate around £120m through player sales this summer as a result of their Championship relegation. Summerville could account for nearly half of that sum, given his £50m price tag, suggesting the club may be open to bids in that range.

The 24-year-old has already found the net twice in two World Cup outings, highlighting the threat he carries in attack. Given his impressive displays, United will need to act quickly once the tournament concludes to secure their target, with Roma also hovering with interest. Should Summerville complete a switch to United, he is likely to be integrated gradually rather than being thrown straight into the starting XI, with Matheus Cunha having cemented himself as the preferred left-wing option since Carrick assumed control. The Dutchman could still provide valuable contributions when summoned from the substitutes' bench.

Carrick spoilt for choice

Carrick may find himself with an abundance of options when selecting his starting XI to face Sergej Jakirovic's side on the opening day. This could result in some difficult decisions, but a well-stocked squad will prove essential to competing across multiple competitions this season, with the likes of Summerville (if signed), Kobbie Mainoo and Benjamin Sesko all expected to feature prominently as the campaign progresses.

Dream Manchester United starting line-up to face Hull City: Senne Lammens; Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw; Felix Nmecha, Ederson; Amad, Bruno Fernandes, Patrick Dorgu; Bryan Mbeumo.
