Auto Express has named the Cupra Raval as the best small car to purchase in the UK, dethroning the previous winner, the Fiat Grande Panda. The electric supermini, produced by the VW Group, claimed the publication's Supermini of the Year 2026 title, praised for its engaging drive, competitive pricing, and practical interior.
Top Three Small Cars of 2026
The Cupra Raval took the top spot, followed by the Fiat Grande Panda in second place and the Kia Picanto in third. The Raval was commended for its character and talents, though reviewers noted a "slightly disjointed cabin design" and had yet to test the entry-level variant. Auto Express concluded: "This supermini-sized EV is in part a preview of what to expect when Volkswagen's ID.Polo goes on sale a little further down the line, but the Cupra has its own character and talents - enough to be rated Supermini of the Year at the Auto Express 2026 New Car Awards."
Fiat Grande Panda: A Strong Runner-Up
The Fiat Grande Panda, which held the top spot earlier in the year, was applauded for its competitive pricing, "playful" character, and "fantastic cabin." However, it lost marks for a lack of refinement at higher speeds, a "sluggish" powertrain, and a limited-functionality information display. The hybrid version was noted for its efficiency and practicality at a competitive price point.
Kia Picanto: City Car Champion
Finishing third, the Kia Picanto claimed the City Car of the Year title for 2025. It was praised for its entertaining driving experience, features list rivalling larger models, and generous interior space. However, it dropped points for its modest one-litre engine feeling lethargic, the absence of a hybrid variant, and being undercut on price by the Dacia Sandero.
