Coventry City Set to Sign Axel Tuanzebe on Free Transfer

Coventry City have the opportunity to snap up Axel Tuanzebe on a free transfer this summer when his Burnley contract ends. The DR Congo international, currently representing his nation at the World Cup, would prove a shrewd addition to Frank Lampard's squad.

Premier League Return and Squad Building

The Sky Blues are back in the Premier League, and assembling a team capable of competing in England's top division is the number one priority. Frank Onyeka has become the first arrival after spending last season on loan at the Coventry Building Society Arena, though further reinforcements will be required before the transfer deadline.

Reports indicate that a centre-back sits high on manager Lampard's shopping list following Bobby Thomas's contract extension, and Burnley defender Tuanzebe would represent smart business.

Tuanzebe's Career Journey

The 28-year-old came through the ranks at Manchester United, emerging from their youth academy. He made his first-team bow aged just 19 and appeared destined for stardom after keeping Kylian Mbappe quiet during a 2-1 Champions League victory over PSG six years ago.

However, temporary moves would subsequently follow. He enjoyed periods at Aston Villa, Napoli and Stoke City before departing United for Ipswich Town in 2023. At Portman Road, he contributed to their promotion push and delivered an impressive Premier League campaign. Following the Tractor Boys' relegation, he moved to Burnley and featured intermittently as his side failed to beat the drop.

Despite making just 14 appearances and his team finishing 19th, Tuanzebe demonstrated flashes of quality. In a 1-1 draw against Liverpool in January, he registered 19 clearances and also netted in a 2-2 draw against Tottenham. He completed 85 per cent of his passes and proved a dominant figure at the back, although he encountered some difficulties with injuries.

World Cup Impact and Manager's Praise

Tuanzebe is presently on international duty with DR Congo and it is largely down to him that his nation qualified for the World Cup. In March, he netted a dramatic extra-time winner in an international play-off against Jamaica to book their place in the competition, achieving national hero status.

His contract with Burnley will shortly expire and current manager Mike Jackson believes he can still have an impact at the highest level. He said: "I think he's been really strong. He's going to the World Cup... but he's come in after not being available enough for us this season. That's disappointing because I think he can make a difference with the profile that he's got in the Premier League."

Why Tuanzebe Fits Coventry

Beyond the fact that Tuanzebe would pose no financial gamble, arriving on a free transfer and not requiring excessive wages, his playing style and experience would bring balance to Lampard's backline. Thomas is the defensive standout and Liam Kitching is dependable, but neither has sampled top-flight football previously.

Tuanzebe is 28, in his prime and boasts extensive Premier League experience across four different clubs. He is also versatile and capable of operating at right-back. Tactically, his ball retention is particularly impressive, evidenced by his 85 per cent pass completion rate. Tuanzebe also excels aerially. He claimed 22 aerial duels despite limited minutes last season and could equally deploy this strength offensively from set pieces.

Moreover, Lampard may wish to switch to a back five at times in the Premier League and Tuanzebe can operate in this system and a high line, having done so at the World Cup and with Burnley.

Low-Risk, High-Reward Opportunity

Tuanzebe essentially represents a low-risk, high-reward potential move for Doug King. Should he disappoint, his wages aren't excessive and he can simply be released. Should he flourish, you've secured a reliable defensive option with experience and appropriate tactical nous for nothing.
