Celtic are closely monitoring Tottenham midfielder Alfie Devine, who has been endorsed by manager Martin O'Neill after a scouting mission in April. The 21-year-old impressed during his season-long loan at Preston North End, where he was a standout performer.
Devine's Loan Success and Transfer Situation
Devine, rated at £6 million, caught the eye at Preston, where the club activated an exclusive option to sign him permanently. However, that option expired on July 1, leaving the door open for Celtic. Preston's record transfer fee would be smashed three times over if they were to match the valuation.
Celtic have extensively scouted the England youth international in recent months, with O'Neill personally attending Preston's 1-1 draw with Queens Park Rangers in April. Devine provided an assist in that match.
O'Neill's Subtle Endorsement
O'Neill, who was working under the proviso he might not remain as Celtic boss beyond the season, explained his trip: "I went because we should still be looking at players. Also, I know Preston director Peter Ridsdale from way back when Leeds tried to get me."
When pressed on the player, O'Neill endorsed Devine without naming him: "Someone I think could be good, the new manager might feel differently. But at least it's someone you can put on the board and say, 'We looked at them'."
Celtic's Summer Transfer Activity
Celtic recently secured Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on a one-year deal, and talks continue for Qarabag forward Camilo Duran. Loan star Marcelo Saracchi could also return before the transfer window closes.
