BYD Dolphin G DM-i: UK's Cheapest Plug-In Hybrid Coming Soon

BYD is set to launch the Dolphin G DM-i, a plug-in hybrid supermini that could become the UK's most affordable model of its kind. The compact hatchback aims to offer a cheaper entry point to electrified driving, combining an electric motor with a petrol engine for flexibility.

While official pricing has not been announced, the Dolphin G DM-i is expected to start at around £23,000 when it reaches UK showrooms. This would position it between the all-electric Dolphin Surf (£18,675-£23,975) and the larger Atto 2 DM-i SUV (£26,995).

BYD claims the Dolphin G DM-i will be the only supermini in Europe to offer plug-in hybrid technology. The car measures 4,160mm long and 1,825mm wide, placing it in the same class as the Renault Clio, Toyota Yaris and Vauxhall Corsa. BYD promises family-car levels of practicality, with full boot space and interior details to be confirmed closer to launch.

Full technical specifications, including battery size and electric-only range, have yet to be revealed. However, BYD says the car will be capable of more than 621 miles on a full battery and tank of petrol. The entry-level Atto 2 DM-i, which uses similar technology, has a 7.8kWh battery and 1.5-litre petrol engine, offering 31 miles of electric range and a total range of 577 miles. The smaller, more efficient Dolphin G is expected to exceed these figures.

The Dolphin G DM-i is the first BYD model developed specifically for overseas markets, including Europe. BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li said: 'The European B-segment is one of the most important parts of the market, and with Dolphin G DM-i, we want to redefine what customers can expect from a compact car in the electric era.'

BYD plans to launch the Dolphin G DM-i fully in June, with first customer cars expected towards the end of summer or into autumn. UK pricing, equipment levels and full technical details will be announced nearer the time.
