BT TV relaunch to rival Sky and Freeview with new streaming boxes

BT is relaunching its BT TV service on October 15, bringing live TV, streaming services and premium content into one place as it takes on rivals such as Sky, Virgin and Freeview. The company is offering two different ways to watch, with a more premium BT TV Box Pro and a compact BT TV Box Edge.

Two new devices to watch TV

The BT TV Box Pro gives homes access to standard channels along with hours of on-demand content. It includes the ability to pause, rewind live TV and record over 600 hours of TV, so users should never miss a moment of their favourite shows.

For those who prefer a simpler streaming experience, the BT TV Box Edge is a more compact device, similar to Sky Stream, making it easy to access and save favourite on-demand and catch-up shows.

BT brand comeback continues

This relaunch follows BT's decision to reignite its consumer brand, after previously pushing back on consumer-facing products in favour of its sister brand EE. In May, BT Mobile was rebooted, with existing broadband users able to sign up for SIM deals.

BT's CEO Allison Kirkby explained at the time: "Having invested heavily into our networks in recent years, this is now the moment to invest even further in our brands, products and services."

Bringing entertainment together

Luciano Oliveira, Managing Director Products, Consumer, BT, said: "Finding something great to watch shouldn’t mean navigating a maze of apps, subscriptions and devices. We’ve designed BT TV to bring customers’ entertainment and sport together, making it easier to find what they love, and giving them the freedom to watch live, record their favourites and catch-up when it suits them. Combined with BT broadband, it gives customers a simpler, more complete connected experience from the provider they know and trust."

There is currently no word on price, but EE TV, which is very similar to BT TV, starts from £15 per month for those with BT broadband. It is unclear whether both EE and BT services will continue side by side, but for now, homes are getting an even wider choice of providers. The launch marks an important milestone for the BT brand, completing its connected offering across broadband, TV and mobile, allowing customers to bring all three services together with one provider.
