Arsenal's Nwaneri Criticized by Marseille Boss

Ethan Nwaneri's challenging loan spell at Marseille has worsened after manager Habib Beye publicly criticised the Arsenal youngster for a lack of dedication. The 19-year-old joined the Ligue 1 club in January and initially impressed under former boss Roberto De Zerbi, scoring on his debut against Lens. However, De Zerbi departed a month later to take charge of Arsenal's rivals Tottenham, leading to Beye's appointment as head coach.

Limited Opportunities Under New Management

Since Beye took over, Nwaneri has struggled for game time, failing to start any of the last 11 matches. He remained an unused substitute in Marseille's 1-1 home draw with Nice on Sunday. When asked what the midfielder needs to do to earn more minutes ahead of the final three games, Beye offered a worrying assessment.

“He’s a quality player, but he has to give us way more in his day-to-day commitment,” Beye told L1+. “Other players gave way more.”

Nwaneri's Background and Loan Move

Nwaneri enjoyed a breakout 2024-25 campaign at Arsenal, scoring nine goals in 37 appearances. He made history two years earlier as the youngest Premier League player ever, debuting against Brentford at 15 years and 181 days old. Arsenal teammate Max Dowman is now the second youngest, making his debut this season against Leeds at 15 years and 235 days.

Seeking more playing time, Nwaneri moved to Marseille on a short-term loan after finding opportunities limited under Mikel Arteta. He has managed two goals and an assist in nine league appearances but has not progressed as expected. With only three games remaining, his future at Marseille looks uncertain.
